This week in nursery, the children had a fantastic time exploring sand through hands-on play. It was a great way to learn about textures and changes — all part of our Understanding the World learning in EYFS.
We started with dry sand, which felt soft, grainy, and loose. The children enjoyed pouring it, sifting it, and watching it slip through their fingers. It made gentle sounds as it moved, but it was tricky to build with — it kept falling apart!
Then we added water and discovered wet sand. It felt cool, sticky, and smooth. The children noticed how the sand changed colour and became perfect for building shapes like sandcastles. It held together much better than dry sand!
This activity sparked lots of curiosity and big words, helping the children explore cause and effect, develop fine motor skills, and enjoy sensory play.
👏 Well done to all our little explorers — you’re learning so much through play

This week in the 2yo nursery, we had so much fun with water play! There were lots of giggles, splashes, and curious little hands exploring all the ways we can play and learn with water.
The children loved:
- Filling up jugs, cups, and containers
- Pouring water from one to another — sometimes it went in, sometimes it splashed out!
- Watching the water flow and swirl
- Feeling the cool, wet water on their hands and arms
Water play is more than just fun — it helps our little ones:
- Build strong hands and fingers by holding and pouring
- Learn about full and empty, heavy and light
- Discover what happens when we pour, tip, or splash
- Practice taking turns and playing together
It was a joyful, splashy week full of learning through play. Well done to all our little water explorers — you made a big splash in nursery this week!
